A contest that teaches the importance of bees to agriculture

In Decatur, Tenn, a beekeeper is giving away a freebie that includes free bees, honey bees that is.

Walt Carpenter, who took up beekeeping a decade ago and says his health now makes it difficult to do the lifting involved, has offered an award through the CBA, the Cherokee Beekeepers Association.

A young person, 12-17 yrs old, will win all it takes to set up beekeeping; items include: protective clothing, tools and a full colony of live honey bees. more

"How well do you have to know someone to help them?"  the barista challenges.

Short drip coffee was part of Annamarie Ausness's same morning routine ordered from the same Starbucks barista everyday for nearly three years.

Their relationship didn't go beyond the short exchange, until the day Ausness mentioned she was on the kidney transplant list and barista Sandy Andersen decided to get tested.

Weeks later, "over handing her a cup of coffee I grabbed her hand and said, I'm a match. And I want to donate to you," said barista Sandra Andersen.   more

Charity work begins where clean-up left off

Nearly 500 students from Georgia Technical Institute constructed the 2,100-square-foot play area complete with swings, slides and climbing apparatus in Chalmette, an area that had been devastated by flood waters unleashed by Hurricane Katrina.
