Nurse Faye chooses humor as a way of life

With her belief that laughter is indeed the best medicine, registered nurse Faye Little entertains local audiences with her astute observations on the humor in life.

A psychiatric nurse two days a week at Danville Regional Medical Center, Little is turning her natural sense of humor into a way to boost people’s health and donate money to her favorite charities. She shares her funny stories and outlook on life for community organizations and at various gatherings.

“It’s sort of a ministry,” Little said. “When I started out, I didn’t know what to charge - someone wanted to pay me with a bushel of sweet potatoes. But when I give money to charities, people are more willing to open their pockets.”

She calls herself a “humorist,” explaining that the difference between a humorist and a comedian is that “the stories I tell really happen. I don’t make anything up.”

Growing up on a farm, Little said she found plenty of reasons to laugh.

“A farm is a good environment for humor,” she said. “If a pane was broken in a window, we stuffed a pillow in it. Nowadays that is called a ‘window treatment.’”

As a nurse, Little has an interest in the health benefits of humor and has spent time researching the subject.

“Humor can lower your blood pressure, increase circulation and help your immune system function,” she shares with her audience.

Little even uses her humor as she helps her patients.

“When I am talking to the patients, I try to see what their perception is and if it could be worse,” Little said. “Usually something funny will come out.”

Once when she had to return a phone she bought at Wal-Mart, Little sat down to wait for the manager and sat next to a gentleman who had been sitting and waiting for his wife for two hours.

“When I die, I’m going to be buried in the Wal-Mart parking lot because I know she’ll come to visit me every day,” he said.

Little also gives advice on planning for the future: “Be kind to your children because they will choose your nursing home.”

When she and her son came home after grocery shopping one day, she didn’t realize that he had put the hamburger away under the sink. Several days later, she realized it after tracking down a stench in the kitchen. Fortunately for her son, she saw the humor in the situation.

Little believes that she inherited her sense of humor from her father, not her mother.

“My mother was sure that if she had a green banana, she was going to wind up slipping on the peel and killing herself,” Little said. “She was a pessimist, which was probably why she died at the young age of 71.”

As for herself, she chooses humor as a way of life.

“None of us can control the wind, but we can adjust our sails and you can do that with humor,” Little said.
