Physician puts money where mouth is on weight-loss assistance

One of the hardest-working men in medicine is coming up with new encores to inspire people to lose weight.

Dr. James Brown recently gave his second $1,000 check to a winning weight-loss team, has started a weekly radio show and continues to urge others to cook at home rather than stop at fast-food restaurants the way he used to before dropping 75 pounds.

Brown is going strong.

"Someone has to do it," said Brown, a Mt. Morris Township family practitioner with Genesys Health System. "We tell patients they need to lose weight but not how. Sometimes people also need an incentive."

On Jan. 5, he gave $1,000 to charity in honor of Dollie Twigg, 48, of Flint Township and her brother Johnnie Jones, 49, of Mundy Township for losing more than 100 pounds between them.

"They started out slow, but ultimately she inspired him and he inspired her," Brown said. "It's hard to do it by yourself. You need the support of others or a group (to lose weight)."

Twigg, who weighed about 200 pounds last year, attended both Freedom from Fat conferences hosted in 2006 by Brown, his wife, Semaj, and others. Health screenings, nutrition workshops on vegetarian eating and self-image seminars were offered free.

"It's a year later, and I'm 40 pounds lighter," Twigg said.

She has cut out white flour, white bread and sugar from her diet. Plus, rather than sugary cereal, she eats oatmeal for breakfast. No brown sugar or syrup on top; berries are in.
